It Takes a Village

What if your neighbourhood wasn't just where you lived—but a place built to support connection, affordability, and sustainability for everyone?

Killick Ecovillage is Newfoundland and Labrador's first cohousing initiative, designed around international best practices in community-centred neighbourhoods. Incorporated as a nonprofit housing co-operative, Killick brings people together to live affordably while balancing dense development with land preservation.

The Impact

A new model for housing that puts people, affordability, and sustainability at the heart of community life.

"At Killick Ecovillage, 'it takes a village' isn't just a saying—it's how we live, learn, and thrive together."

Killick Ecovillage was founded by a group of residents determined to build a neighbourhood that fosters relationships, active living, and long-term sustainability. Unlike condominiums, where individuals hold private titles, Killick's co-operative model ensures that the property is owned collectively. Members purchase shares in the co-op, granting them the right to occupy their homes while keeping costs lower and stability higher.

This approach not only addresses housing affordability in rural areas but also opens doors to federal and provincial support for nonprofit housing. By pooling resources and responsibilities, members are building an affordable, sustainable, and deeply connected place to call home.

Why Co-op?

The housing co-op model aligns perfectly with Killick's vision: affordability, shared responsibility, and community-driven decision-making. Through democratic and sociocratic governance, members serve on committees, participate in decision-making circles, and share in the upkeep of the property. Seniors can age in place with dignity, families benefit from intergenerational wisdom, and children grow up in a supportive, "village" environment.

Why It Matters

Killick Ecovillage proves that housing doesn't have to be about profit—it can be about creating vibrant, resilient communities where people look out for one another and live sustainably.
